About Karen
Karen started practicing yoga in 1996 in a quest to reconnect with her body and its wisdom. She has explored and enjoys a variety of styles of yoga, contact improvisation, and authentic movement as ways to discover, connect, explore and express through her body. Karen has a passion for teaching and empowering people to connect to their authentic selves.
Karen began teaching yoga in 2001, is certified through the NC School of Yoga and is registered with Yoga Alliance. After completing 650 hours of training in assisted asana technique, therapeutic dialogue, body/mind integrative techniques, applied anatomy and more, she graduated and became a certified Phoenix Rising Yoga Therapy Practitioner. She has served as a mentor in the yoga therapy training program.
From her studies, personal experience, and working with students and clients, she believes that bringing awareness to body, mind, and Spirit during practice supports both self knowledge and invites inspiration toward living a more whole, fulfilled life. She brings to her teaching and sessions both respect for the body's wisdom as well as a playful spirit.

All About Phoenix Rising Yoga Therapy
Who Can Benefit from a Session? Do I have to do yoga?
You do not need any yoga experience to receive a PRYT session. Strength, flexibility, and hatha yoga experience are not prerequisites to receive profound benefits from a customized, private PRYT session. All you do is simply relax, focus, and experience something completely beyond expectations. Sessions have proven effective in helping clients work through problems, in coming to terms with decision points, and in letting go of things that are holding them back in life. Many clients describe it as a mental and physical massage. The sessions are based on alignment and yogic principles, but I will ensure that those principles are met - you won't need to think about it!
How Will I Benefit from a Session? - release fears, anxieties and stress
- enhance body awareness, strength and flexibility
- sense of empowerment to make changes
- gain clarity around life issues
- deep relaxation
If you're new to this type of work, you will likely enjoy the process of focusing attention on yourself in a nonjudgmental, loving, and respectful atmosphere. Beginning sessions will be a time to plant the seeds to better express yourself in life.
Those who are experienced at seeking connections between body, mind and Spirit can reach a deeper level of understanding and personal integration.
What to Expect in a Phoenix Rising Yoga Therapy (PRYT) Session
PRYT sessions can be transformative, revealing, healing and relaxing. They can
help reveal how life pressures affect your body, health and moods. Karen customizes each session to what's happening with you. A typical session begins with a centering, where you let go of your day and focus on yourself and your body. Next, Karen may guide you through a body scan, where you check in and become more aware of all of your body parts, taking note of anything that comes up. You may do some very simple supported warm-up exercises before she guides you into yoga poses, which are chosen based on your dialogue and your focus for the session. In a safe and nurturing environment, she holds and supports you in the stretch, allowing the body to fully relax and the mind to notice and perhaps let go of typical thinking patterns. At this point, you may become aware of recent, past or unconscious feelings or incidents. Karen maintains a dialoguing process throughout the session to guide you to your own discoveries and conclusions. The session closes through a guided integration, where you can begin making connections between the results of the session, your life situations and respond to them.
While most sessions take place on the floor on an oversized, thickly-padded, comfortable yoga mat, sessions can be adapted for people who can't get down on the mat comfortably. Accommodations can also be made for people who do not want to be physically touched.
